Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and SpaceXAI are facing an AI slowdown antitrust lawsuit that accuses the companies of coordinating efforts to reduce the pace of artificial intelligence development. The case was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California by four paying subscribers of AI services.

The complaint argues that cooperation between major AI companies could limit competition and reduce the value customers receive from paid services such as ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Gemini. The companies have not publicly responded to the lawsuit as of the latest reports.

The AI development slowdown lawsuit focuses heavily on events from September 12. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had called for industry cooperation to slow the advance of increasingly capable AI systems and strengthen safety measures. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis and SpaceX AI CEO Elon Musk subsequently expressed support for aspects of the proposal.

Amodei’s proposal included outside evaluations, shared safety benchmarks and limits on how quickly AI capabilities should advance. He also acknowledged that cooperation between competing companies could create antitrust concerns and suggested government involvement in establishing a legal framework.

The plaintiffs argue that the companies should not collectively decide how quickly the industry should progress. Their case is based on AI antitrust concerns surrounding cooperation between direct competitors rather than on any single company’s decision to slow its own development.
