Why Is Uber Cutting 3,300 Jobs Amid AI and Robotaxi Push?

Jobs Amid AI

Why is Uber cutting 3,300 jobs after five years of growth? The company is eliminating about 3,300 positions, or roughly 10% of its global workforce, as CEO Dara Khosrowshahi seeks to simplify the organisation and redirect resources towards artificial intelligence and robotaxis.

Uber had about 34,000 employees at the end of last year, according to Reuters. The latest Uber job cuts are the company’s largest since the Covid-19 pandemic, when it eliminated about 6,700 positions in May 2020.

Khosrowshahi said the decision followed a period of rapid expansion that had made the company more complicated. He pointed to additional management layers, coordination requirements and fragmented ownership as reasons for restructuring the organisation.

The company also faces increasing competition in areas that are important to its business. In the US food delivery market, DoorDash holds about 64% of the market compared with Uber’s 34%, according to the source. Competition is also growing in the UK, France and Germany.

The Uber layoffs 2026 come as the company prepares to spend more heavily on autonomous transportation. Analysts at Citi estimated the workforce reduction could generate about $825 million in annual savings, giving Uber more room to invest in its robotaxi plans.

Uber has committed more than $10 billion towards expanding its robotaxi network and plans to have its fleet operating in at least 15 states this year. The company is facing competition from Alphabet-backed Waymo as the autonomous vehicle market develops.

Artificial intelligence is also part of Uber’s longer-term strategy. Although Khosrowshahi did not directly blame AI for the Uber job cuts, analysts said greater efficiency from the company’s AI investments may have contributed to the restructuring.

The workforce changes will also affect how remaining employees work. Most Uber staff will be required to work from offices three days a week, while only around 1% will be allowed to work fully remotely.

The answer to why Uber is cutting 3,300 jobs lies in a combination of organisational restructuring, cost savings and a shift towards future businesses. The company is using the savings to make its operations simpler while increasing its focus on Uber AI and robotaxis.
